Grow me instead…plant a species local to your area
An initiative of the Nursery and Garden Industry, Grow me instead aims to encourage people to grow non-invasive plant species in their gardens. In keeping with this theme, Weedbusters is promoting the message that people should select and grow plants that are local to their area. Planting local species has many benefits including “drought-proofing” your garden, protecting biodiversity and providing habitat for wildlife.
Plant nurseries, Greening Australia and your local council can provide good advice about what plants to grow and particularly what not to grow.
You can do your part by spreading the message, or running an activity or event in your local area. See below for some ways to get involved. Everyone needs to know about the damaging impacts of weeds that are costing Australia more than $4 billion each year and causing many species of plants and animals to be listed as "endangered".
